My wife and I tried Bullock's for the first time this week. We are both avid BBQ enthusiasts and I have been a BBQ judge for several years now. I have eaten many varieties of BBQ in my time and I prefer the North Carolina vinegar style the best. In my quest for the best BBQ, I have determined that Lexington BBQ restaurant is the pinnacle example of superb NC BBQ with Speedy's BBQ (also in lexington, NC) a veeeery close second. on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being the best) I give each of these lexington restaurants a 10.
As for Bullock's BBQ, I give them a 5.5. My wife gives them a 5.0. We enjoyed their BBQ and thought that it was better than most in the Durham area. They use just a little too much sauce in the shreaded meat which covers the natural pork flavor. Also, their meat was not as `clean` as I like. I made a little pile of arteries and solid fat on the edge of my plate. This is a shame and a bit gross, but worst of all, you are charged money for it.
As for their home cooking... I am no expert in this field. I, like most, just know what I like. Theirs is just average. The fried chicken was way over-cooked and almost burnt. The vegetables are obviously from a can instead of fresh, but the green beans were great. The corn tasted as if it was poured right from the can... not bad but certainly not worthy of high praise about their home cooking.
My wife and I both feel that we will go back and eat at Bullock's again. We did enjoy most of it and it might well be the best in the area. But there is better food out there people. Go and find it! (for the best home cooking, try Fran's Front Porch.)
